COMMUNITY BUILDING

The Joint Venture recognises that to achieve meaningful and sustainable community outcomes there is a need to focus on how the new suburb of Lyons will function as a community that enjoys a true sense of place and a feeling of belonging for a diverse range of future residents.

The community consultation process is an important first step in creating links and partnerships with community organisations and other stakeholders who can help to build a sense of community in Lyons . This process of community engagement will extend beyond the project's initial stages and will be a continuing feature of the Joint Venture's involvement in Lyons.

The Joint Venture is committed to a range of community building initiatives including:

  • Creating a Community Plan that will develop participation and support structures in Lyons and ensure the timely delivery of a range of services and community facilities
  • Developing a Community Development Program that will take a proactive approach to providing support to the residents of Lyons and will help to create a vibrant and resilient community
  • Delivering a sustainability education program that will provide new residents with a greater understanding of the environmental qualities of their new suburb
  • Developing partnerships with local organisations and groups to deliver community development and community support to residents of Lyons , and
  • Working with local Indigenous groups to maximise Indigenous community participation in the project.

The Community Plan was developed during the pre-lodgement phase and was included in the documents lodged with the development application. Key findings from the Community Plan included:

  • The projected population for Lyons is anticipated to be approximately 2,075 people
  • The age profile for Lyons includes significant proportions of 0-11 year olds, almost half of the population aged 25-49 years and smaller proportions of people aged 60 and over
  • For the non-DHA households it is anticipated that the private market purchasers will be largely second and third homebuyers
  • Children’s services have been identified as an important human service given the likely numbers of children projected for Lyons
  • NT Government advises that nearby primary schools have sufficient existing capacity to meet the anticipated demand generated by the development of Lyons
  • The plan identifies the importance of the early provision of a neighbourhood facility that will be designed to act as a focal point and gathering place for the new community, and
  • The plan identifies strategies for the integration of Lyons with the existing neighbourhoods and outlines a strategy for community development.

As a result of the findings of the Community Plan, the Lyons Joint Venture is investigating options for the provision of child care services on the site.
