R H Dougherty Award for Excellence in Communication

The Bronte Catchment Project was highly commended in a NSW local government awards ceremony on 31st July 2002.

The RH Dougherty Award, for the category 'Excellence in Communication', was received on behalf of Waverley Council by its General Manager, Kim Anson.

Waverley Council implemented the Bronte Catchment Project (BCP) to improve stormwater management in Bronte Catchment through local community participation.

The overall aim was to reduce stormwater pollution by changing individual, community and council behaviours that contribute to stormwater pollution. Members of the Bronte community, as part of a community network, participated in identifying appropriate action to prevent stormwater pollution and developed recommendations to this end.

Judges’ comments:

"A very exciting project."

"The citizen jury is a worthy experiment."

"Waverley has created a model for other councils to use."

The R H Dougherty Award was established in 1981 and named after former Local Government Association President, Robert Henry Dougherty, an experienced councillor who had a vision for Local Government to develop real means of communication between councils and their communities.

There are two awards – Community Reporting and Excellence in Communication - in three population size categories – less than 20,000, 20,000-60,000 and more than 60,000.

The award for Excellence in Communication with the local community covers communication strategies put in place by councils to meet a specific community related issue.
