New Health Services

Concept PlanThe primary aim of the Concept Plan is to redevelop RNSH’s existing facilities into a co-ordinated, compact, state-of-the art centre on the western side of the site.

The new hospital design will reflect changing patterns of care to accommodate an ageing population and innovations in health care, such as day-only and short-stay surgery.

The services at the new Acute Service Building and the Ambulatory Care Building  will include:

  • An emergency department and an intensive care unit
  • Medical imaging
  • Integrated cancer care centre with radiation oncology, chemotherapy and haematology
  • An ‘Interventional ward’ comprising operating theatres, cardiac catheter laboratories, 23-hour ward and pain management centre
  • A spinal unit
  • Sleep and acute dialysis
  • Significant Inpatient beds
  • Retail services.

A new, purpose built Research and Education Building will house specialist medical research and training facilities.  It is aimed that ultimately 500 researchers will work in this building. The educational facilities will house the clinical training and simulation centre, library and a lecture theatre.

The Primary Care/Community Health Building will provide significant space for health services, including:

  • Community health services
  • Mental health services
  • Drug and alcohol
  • Child and family services
  • Aged care
  • Dental
  • Renal dialysis.

It is anticipated that the main new hospital building will be completed in 2010.  The totality of the project will be delivered in 10-15 years after the date of Concept Plan approval.
