About Royal North Shore Hospital Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) is a major teaching, research and referral hospital on Sydney’s North Shore. The Hospital has an emergency department and a trauma centre. It plays a significant role in the provision of specialist services for the Sydney metropolitan area, particularly in surgical and medical services, paediatrics, maternity and community health. RNSH provides a range of state-wide services including a burns unit, spinal injuries, neonatal intensive care and pain management and research. RNSH has a well-established research community with about 300 researchers located on site. It is particularly well-known for its ‘bench to bedside’ philosophy, which provides opportunities for researchwith immediate and practical applications for patient care. Research at RNSH has resulted in improvements in health care across a range of areas including pain management, bone and joint disease, mental health, heart, lung and kidney disease, spinal injuries, cardiac technology, cancer genetics, diabetes, maternal/fetal medicine, hypertension and stroke and, most recently, the application of thalidomide in cancer treatment. The RNSH community catchment area includes the local government areas of Mosman, North Sydney, Willoughby and Lane Cove. It has grown incrementally since a cottage hospital was first established on the site in 1903. Now it comprises of more than 50 buildings scattered over a 12 hectare site. This creates some inefficiencies. |
